This week for self directed, I wanted to experiment with substance designer to see what I could make.
My point of focus was a road.
My reference was the road I did for my material studies last year, having a clearly defined line in order to make it stand out as a road.
Overall, it looks like a road, but could use more work.
I tried to examine Pat's substance material for asphalt, but was unsure on how to replicate the small stone chippings on the road. However, I just put a noise over it and played with the levels, then attached it to the normals. Additionally, I did this with an edge detected grunge map to create cracks. I then plugged these in to the height map to show a clear indent in the road.
Furthermore, I put dirt in these cracks and added a soft AO in order to help make the cracks visible when no height was active.
