For my self directed task this week, I wanted to gather reference for my pumpkin, but also understand potential properties for the pumpkin.
In this picture I have outlined various features of the pumpkin that I spotted. In a lot of places there is height/normal variation, which adds to the more organic feel of the pumpkin, in addition, roughness variation can be seen, such as the pumpkin on the right, I outlined the roughness value because everything surrounding that white speck is still orange, where as that part is reflective, meaning that would have a low roughness value to corelate.
This piece I drew up in photoshop could be a visual representation of roughness value. Having AO areas that are very rough makes sense as these are the places that are less damaged but could also help aid the AO maps when baking in substance painter. These areas haven't been touched like the surface, so in addition, there could be some finger print oil left behind that represents low roughness values. From my observation, rough values always seem to be darker in value whereas lighter tones have the effect of seeming brighter due to the reflective properties of the material.
Finally, other properties I noticed was the idea of 'bloom' or more akin to sub surface scattering (SSS) around where light penetrates the thinnest part of the pumpkin, most notably around the mouth and eye areas of the pumpkin, which results in the orange turning a glowing red colour, similar to that of our skin.
